The Dallas Commuter's Guide to Childcare in Ellis County

If you live in Ellis County and work in Dallas, your day is built around the highway. Child care has to fit on both ends: early enough that you can get on the road before traffic builds, and late enough that a slow drive home doesn't turn into a scramble. This guide puts real numbers on the commute and turns them into questions you can take to any provider.

You are far from alone. Among Ellis County workers, 42.9% work outside the county they live in, compared with 20.6% of workers statewide, and 25.6% commute 45 minutes or more each way, compared with 16.9% across Texas (Census Bureau American Community Survey 2020–2024 5-year estimates, via Census Reporter).

How long is the drive to downtown Dallas from Ellis County?

We estimated the drive from each town center to Dallas City Hall using OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM). These are free-flow numbers, which means no traffic at all. Treat them as the best case, not what you will see at 7:15 on a Tuesday.

Ennis, Palmer, Ferris, and Corsicana all reach downtown on I-45. Waxahachie is the exception: the fastest route from there runs up I-35E, not I-45, so a Waxahachie parent heading to Dallas is usually on a different highway than an Ennis parent. From Corsicana, I-45 and US 287 run together north to Ennis before US 287 splits off toward Waxahachie.

Road work matters too. TxDOT's Ellis County construction list shows intersection improvements at I-45 and SH 34 (Ennis Avenue) in Ennis, scheduled from August 2025 to August 2026 (TxDOT, Q4 2025). Check TxDOT for current status before you count on a particular exit.

How long is the average commute from each town?

The drive to Dallas is one number. The average commute of people who actually live in each place is another. This table shows the mean travel time to work, one way, for workers who don't work from home. The mean is our calculation from Census tables B08013 and B08012 (Census Reporter API). Small towns have large margins of error, so read Ferris and Palmer as rough.

Palmer, Ferris, and Ellis County as a whole average longer commutes than the state. Ennis sits close to the Texas average (Census Reporter, Ennis), but averages hide the parents at the long end: the ones heading to downtown Dallas every morning.

What time does child care need to open for your commute?

Work backward from the time you need to be at your desk. Here is a worked example. The buffer and drop-off numbers are assumptions for illustration, not measured traffic data.

In this example, a provider that opens at 6:30 AM is already too late. From Corsicana the math starts even earlier. Before you tour, run the numbers with your own start time and a buffer based on your actual drive.

Early openings are not universal. In the state's licensing data, 16 of 43 full-day licensed child care centers in Ellis County list an opening time before 6:30 AM (HHSC data via the Texas Open Data Portal).

What about pickup at the end of the day?

The evening side is where commutes get unpredictable. A wreck on I-45 or a late meeting can add time with no warning. In the same state dataset, no licensed operation in Ennis lists hours past 6:30 PM (HHSC data). Hours in that dataset are reported to the state and can lag behind a provider's current schedule, so always confirm directly.

What should commuters ask a daycare?

• What are your hours, and do they match the state record? Look the provider up on Search Texas Child Care and compare. If they differ, ask why.
• What happens if I'm late? Get the late fee and the exact minute it starts in writing. At ABC, pickup between 7:00 and 7:15 PM is $10, then $1 per minute, and the fee goes to the teacher who stays.
• How fast do I have to come if my child gets sick? At ABC, parents are asked to pick up within 30 minutes of being called. From Dallas that is not possible, so name a backup adult near home on your authorized pickup list.
• Who can pick up? Ask how the center checks ID and how you add a grandparent or neighbor.
• Are meals included? A center that serves breakfast saves a stop on a 6 AM morning.
• What happens on weather days and holidays? Ask which calendar the provider follows and how closures are announced.

What if you also have school-age kids?

School bells rarely line up with a Dallas commute. School often starts after commuting parents are already on the road, and it lets out well before they can get back. Some child care centers close that gap by driving children to and from school. Ask whether your child's school is on the provider's route, whether rides run both morning and afternoon, and how school holidays and breaks are handled. How can commuting families pay for child care?

CCS child care scholarships. Texas scholarships can help pay for care for children from birth to age 12, or up to 18 with disabilities. Parents must need care to work, go to school, or train an average of at least 25 hours a week (50 combined hours for two parents), and the parent share of cost will not exceed 7% of household income (Texas Child Care Connection). Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas serves both Ellis and Navarro counties (Workforce Solutions NCT). When we checked, it posted a current wait time of up to 36 months (Workforce Solutions NCT), so apply early.

Dependent care FSA. If your employer offers one, the annual limit rises from $5,000 to $7,500 for 2026 (IRS Publication 15-B). Ask HR whether your employer offers one before open enrollment.
